About

Before becoming a medical doctor, Dr Tom worked for the New Zealand Forest service as a Forester trainee, a guide in Coromandel Forest Park then gained a BSc in Botany before achieving a First-Class honours degree in Molecular Genetics.

But life has not always been easy like for many of us, and he was hit by a tidal wave at 2am while working as a doctor in a surf camp in G-Land Indonesia in 1994 which killed 500 people, he has been divorced and then stabbed in a home invasion (not by the same person) and has suffered burn out and depression twice with the break-up of his family and working huge hours and night shifts at the Emergency Department.

He went from being suicidal in his garage in the year 2000 to doing stand-up comedy at the Classic Comedy bar and touring overseas in a period of 6 weeks (not recommended as a therapeutic option).
